Overview
Fire and Ice zoanthids are a medium-fast growing zoa morph with red outer rings and a cool ice-blue center. They tolerate a wide range of reef conditions which makes them reliable in both nano tanks and large systems.
Lighting
Fire and Ice zoas like moderate light. Around 60 to 120 PAR is a comfortable pocket. Too little light and they stretch. Too much and they shrink tight and lose color intensity. Under blues they glow beautifully, which is why shops favor them for displays.
Flow
They prefer gentle to moderate flow. Enough movement to keep detritus from settling, but not so much that the polyps fold or stay closed. Think swaying rather than blasting.
Placement
Start them low or mid in the tank and move up if needed. They adapt well, but sudden light shocks can cause them to sulk. They attach quickly to rubble, plugs, and rock, which makes fragging simple.
Water Parameters
Stable water beats perfect water. Ideal conditions:
β’ Temp 77 to 79
β’ Salinity 1.025
β’ Alkalinity 8 to 9
β’ Calcium 400 to 450
β’ Nitrates 5 to 15
β’ Phosphates 0.03 to 0.1
Zoas appreciate available nutrients. Running the tank too βsterileβ slows their growth.
Feeding
Not required, but they respond well to occasional feedings of fine particle foods. Once a week feeding often boosts growth and color.
Growth & Propagation
Fire and Ice are mid-speed growers. Expect small new polyps every few weeks when conditions are right. They cut easily with a scalpel or saw. Just keep them clean and avoid letting slime build up after fragging.
Pests & Problems
Zoas have two main enemies: nudibranchs and sundial snails. A good dip before adding new colonies usually keeps problems away. If polyps stay closed for days, inspect for pests, check parameters, and verify nothing is stinging them.
Special Notes
β’ Fire and Ice zoas are excellent for beginners.
β’ They look amazing under high blue, perfect for Instagram and for tank showpieces.
