Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora) – Care Guide πŸ”¨πŸŒŠ

Hammer corals are a reef favorite for their flowing hammer- or anchor-shaped tentacles and their mesmerizing movement. Available in branching or wall types, they’re a hardy and beautiful choice for LPS lovers.

Lighting:

πŸ”† Moderate (80–150 PAR)

Best coloration and growth occur under moderate reef lighting. Acclimate to higher PAR slowly if needed.

Flow:

🌬️ Moderate, indirect flow

Too much direct flow can damage flesh; too little may cause detritus buildup. Aim for a gentle sway.

Water Parameters:

  • Temp: 76–78Β°F

  • Salinity: 1.025

  • Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH

  • Calcium: 420–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm

  • Nitrate: 2–10 ppm

  • Phosphate: 0.02–0.08 ppm

Placement:

πŸ“ Lower to mid-levels in the tank

Ensure enough spaceβ€”tentacles can extend and sting nearby corals, especially at night.

Feeding:

🍀 Optional but beneficial

Can absorb nutrients from the water column. Occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis, reef roids, or coral pellets may boost growth.

Growth Rate:

🌱 Moderate

Branching varieties grow faster and are easier to frag than wall hammers.

Care Level:

βœ… Easy to Moderate – A great choice for hobbyists who want a flowing, colorful showpiece with a bit of attitude.
