Green Monti Cap Care Guide
Green Monti Caps are one of the most forgiving SPS corals. They grow like stacked sail plates and color up beautifully when the system stays stable. Think of them as solar panels that love clean water and predictable chemistry.
Lighting
Medium to high light. PAR between 200 and 300 brings out strong fluorescence and fast plating. They can live in lower PAR, but the growth is slower and more flattened.
Flow
Moderate turbulent flow. The coral needs enough current to keep detritus off the surface and help it build its layered plates. Too much direct blast can chip the growing edges.
Placement
Upper to mid rockwork. Leave room for the classic plate spread. Once it takes off, it shadows whatever sits under it, so plan its territory early.
Water Parameters
Aim for stability.
Calcium around 420.
Alk between 8 and 9.
Magnesium near 1350.
Nitrate 2 to 10.
Phosphate 0.03 to 0.08.
They tolerate imperfect water better than acros but look best when nutrients stay moderate.
Feeding
Monti Caps take in dissolved organics more than chunky food. Occasional broadcast feeding with fine particle foods helps, but it is not required. They grow well even without targeted feeding.
Growth and Behavior
Fast, consistent growth. They can overtake space and shade nearby corals, so trimming the edges is part of routine maintenance. Fragging is easy since the plates break cleanly.
Common Issues
Bleaching usually comes from sudden jumps in light.
Tissue loss along the rim often ties back to low nutrients or unstable alkalinity.
Algae or cyano on the surface points to low flow.
Green Monti Caps are perfect for reefers who want an SPS that is forgiving yet visually impressive. They make great farm pieces too since a single healthy colony can generate endless frags.
