Lobophyllia Coral Care Guide – Meaty, Colorful, and Beginner-Friendly

Lobophyllia corals are large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their fleshy, brain-like appearance and stunning color combinations ranging from reds and greens to rainbows. They’re hardy, easy to care for, and perfect for adding motion and color to the lower zones of your reef.

Care Highlights:

  • 💡 Lighting: Low to moderate PAR (80–150) – prefers soft lighting, will fade under intense LEDs

  • 🌊 Flow: Low to moderate – enough to keep tissue clean but avoid direct blasts

  • 📍 Placement: Sandbed or lower rockwork – give 2–3” space around due to potential expansion and aggression

  • 🍽️ Feeding: Benefits from target feeding 1–2x/week (mysis, reef roids, amino acids) for faster growth and puffier tissue

  • 🧪 Parameters:

    • Temp: 75–78°F

    • Salinity: 1.025

    • dKH: 8–11

    • Calcium: 420–460 ppm

    • Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm

    • Nitrates: 2–10 ppm

    • Phosphates: 0.02–0.08 ppm

Pro Tips:

  • Extend tentacles at night – avoid placing near other corals it could sting

  • Color improves with consistent feeding and trace elements

  • Hardy enough for newer hobbyists, beautiful enough for collectors

Care Level: Easy to Moderate – Excellent for LPS lovers
